Until recently, information about Jerusalem (city and district) in the 19th Century was based on European, Arab, and Jewish sources. But thanks to ********s and memoirs written by the Ottoman governors we are now able to learn about the history of the region as seen through Ottoman eyes. The governors faced difficult challenges springing from European penetration, Jewish immigration, and Arab protest.
The lecture will describe how the Ottomans handled these problems and at the same time attempted to modernize the land in line with their policy in other parts of the Empire.
